A Note from Anne
the book, the play, a poem

I enjoyed compiling The Alaska Reader: Voices from the North with my co-editor Carolyn Kremers. If you live in Alaska, I hope you find some of the writers who inspired you to move here - and stay here. If you don't live in Alaska, I hope you find some new perspectives that take you behind the prevailing myths about the State.

THE ALASKA READER: VOICES FROM THE NORTH, an anthology of Alaskan writing, is available from Fulcrum Publishers. (Click the button at left labeled "BOOK.")

THE SUNSET CLAUSE played to sellout crowds at Fairbanks Drama Association's Riverfront Theatre in Feb. & March. Since the play deals with end-of-life issues, I was gratified to see so many of those who provide care to the terminally ill at the play. The Feb. 25 performance raised over $1200. for Hospice of the Tanana Valley. Reviewer Robert Hannon said, "Hanley has constructed a wonderfully observed and affecting story."

Short rations of the wild

You must stay awake
for the visions when they come
are brief.
A wolf locks eyes with you
one heartbeat
then disappears.
Was he there
or did you dream him?
Unless you train yourself,
you won't be ready
when he comes.
That moment
you mate with your destiny
or you don't.
